Midnight in Paris DVD

One of my favorite movies of 2011, The Midnight in Paris DVD has come out in the US. I went to D&R in an enthusiastic anticipiation but alas, as everything else, it hasn't come out here yet. Keep you eyes open. It might arrive in the next few weeks. I simply cannot wait to watch it again.

Insomniac Productivity

Insomnia. A new territory. A new challange. Some say it hits a person when they are stressed. Some say it is an instinctive reaction to the mood change in the air. Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust

At my old apartment in New York, whenever I stayed at home, I used to lie on my Ikea chaise and put on old records like Charles Mingus, Nina Simone and sometimes Hoagy Carmichael. I loved his tender voice, genuine sweetness of his melodies, and his lyrics made me daydream to no end.

A movie I watched today reminded me of him and his most popular song, Stardust. How beautiful are these lyrics?

And now the purple dusk of twilight time

New York'daki evimde yaşarken, akşamları İkea uzanma koltuğumda yatıp plak çalarımda eski plaklar dinlerdim. Charles Mingus, Nina Simone ve bazen de Hoagy Carmichael. Onun şefkatli sesini, melodilerindeki samimi tatlılığı ve şarkı sözleriyle beni saatlerce hayaller kurdurmasını çok severdim.
Bu akşam seyrettiğim bir film bana onu ve en tanınmış parçasını hatırlattı, Stardust. Sözleri o kadar güzel ki, Türkçe'ye çeviremedim ama orijinali yukarda.

Pull Yourself Together

Everyone around me is falling down left and right. Everyone is complaining about being exhausted. About loneliness. I'm no exception. We're crushed under a mountain of negativity. But as Elizabeth Taylor wisely recommends, "Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick, and pull yourself together." Of course, I'm not sure what the male equivalent of putting on lipstick is for my male readers but you get the picture. :) We're all going to be fine.

Etrafımda sağlı sollu herkes yıkılıyor. Herkes yorgun olmaktan şikayetçi. Yalnızlıktan. Ben de  bir istisna değilim. Bir negatiflik dağı altında eziliyoruz. Ama Elizabeth Taylor'ın bilgece tavsiye ettiği gibi, ''Kendine bir içki koy, rujunu sür ve kendini toparla.'' Tabii ruj sürmenin erkek versiyonu nedir erkek okuyucularım için bilemiyorum ama mesajı anladınız. :) Hepimiz düzeleceğiz.

A Gorgeous Ballad: Kiss me by Tom Waits

There are certain songs that stick with me through certain phases of my life. A song that empathizes with me when I feel misunderstood. A song that says what I can't. A song that fills a void. A song that takes me away to where I need to be... even when I don't know where that place may be.

On my way to work on a rainy morning, I heard a sample of it on NPR, as I was listening to Tom Waits talk about his new album Bad as Me. The tinkling piano, the nostalgic sizzling, Tom Waits singing, "I want you to kiss me like a Stranger. Once... again." At first it aimlessly walked me through the streets of a city I didn't know. And then the bass came in and sat me down in a Blues Bar under a layer of smoke, the neon lights, illuminating my feelings. And as the song got more impatient, an indication of the end, I wanted to push the "repeat" button. A gorgeous ballad.

Be Different. Be You.

After viewing a couple of apartments today, I had a thought. Both apartments were alright, probably even good opportunities that I should jump on. And yet, I'm not going to take them. Although nothing was wrong with them, they didn't speak to me. I couldn't see myself getting excited about decorating it. And then I realized, getting an apartment is like looking for your wedding dress. You know it's the one when you see it.

Despite what the norm says, this is your life, your style, your taste and your choice. Be different by staying loyal to yourself.

Bugün birkaç daireye baktıktan sonra birşeyi farkettim. İki apartman da iyidi, hatta belki de kaçırmamam gereken fırsatlardı. Ama ikisini de tutmayacağım. Her ne kadar büyük problemleri yoktuysa da, bana hitap etmediler. Kendimi bu evleri dekore etmek için herhangi bir heyecan duyarken hayal edemedim. Ve o zaman farkettim ki, ev aramak gelinlik aramaya benziyor. Gördüğün anda sana ait olduğunu hissediyorsun.

30 Years of Friendship

 

Off I go to meet with Mr. M and his friend at our usual spot. It's been a couple of weeks since I've seen him and I can't wait to catch up and tell him all about Paris. And tomorrow we celebrate his 30th. We've been friends since he was born so it's also the 30th birthday of our friendship. I consider myself so lucky to have a childhood friend like him. Cheers to that!

Mr. M'le her zamanki yerimizde buluşmak üzere bendeniz çıkıyorum. Görüşmeyeli birkaç hafta oldu ve hasret giderip ona Paris'i anlatmak için sabırsızlanıyorum. Ve yarın da onun 30. yaşını kutluyor olacağız. O doğduğu günden beri arkadaşız, dolayısıyla dostluğumuzun da 30. doğumgünü. Kendimi onun gibi bir çocukluk arkadaşına sahip olduğum için çok şanslı hissediyorum. Buna kadehler kalkar işte! Şerefe!

Ceaser Salad Recipe

One of my biggest complaints about Istanbul restaurants is not only their lack of loyalty to some classic salads, but also their lack of care to creating new ones on their menus. I especially get frustrated when the menu describes what they call "a special dressing" and simply put a bottle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the table. Wow, very special indeed.

So when I'm home, I'd like to make a big salad for myself. It's filling, it's easy and filled with nutritions. I play around with different ingredients such as a combination of avocado, goat cheese and radishes. Or tuna, fennel and black olives. Ginger is also another ingredient that gives the salad that kick it needs.

So if you are cooking at home and craving a big bowl of salad, I'm going to share the recipe, which gets a big applause every time. Hope you enjoy it.

SHOPPING LIST:

1 cos lettuce, weighing about 1 kg (2 lb)

6 garlic cloves

3 anchovy fillets

1 tbsp (15 ml) Dijon mustard (I use English Coleman's)

pepper

juice of 1 lemon

6 fl oz (175 ml) olive oil

125 g (4 oz) grated Parmesan Cheese

1/2 day-old French baguette 

4 tbsp (60 ml) olive oil

To make the Garlic Croutons:

1. With the bread knife, cut the bread into 1.25 cm (1/2 inch) slices. Stack a few slices on the chopping board, then cut them into cubes. Repeat with the remaining slices.

2. Chop 3 garlic cloves.

2. Heat 4 tbsp (60 ml) of olive oil in the large frying pan. Add the chopped garlic cloves and bread cubes, and fry, stirring constantly, until the croutons are golden, 2-3 minutes.

3. Tip the croutons out of the frying pan onto paper towels to drain.

To prepare the Salad and Dressing:

1. Twist, pull off, and discard the root end from the lettuce, Wash the leaves in plenty of cold water, then rinse each leaf under cold, running water. Dry the lettuce on the tea towel.

2. Peel and finely chop 3 garlic cloves. 

3. Drain the anchovy fillets, put them in a large salad bowl, and crush them with the tines of a table fork. 

4. Add the garlic, mustard, and pepper. Pour in the lemon juice and the olive oil. 

5. Add the lettuce to the dressing and toss until the leaves are well coated.

6. Add half of the garlic croutons and two-thirds of the Parmesan cheese and toss the salad again. 

7. Serve the salad directly from the salad bowl and pass the remaining Parmesan cheese and croutons separately.

İstanbul'da bulunan restoranlardaki en büyük şikayetlerimden biri sadece klasik salata tariflerine olan sadakatsizlikleri değil, ama aynı zamanda menülerine yeni salata yaratırkenki özensizlikleri. Özellikle menülerinde ''özel sos'' yazdıktan sonra masaya sadece zeytinyağı ve balsamik getirmeleri beni çıldırtıyor. Evet, gerçekten çok özelmiş.

O yüzden eve geldiğimde kendime kocaman bir salata yapmayı seviyorum. Doyurucu, basit ve sağlıklı besinlerle dolu. Değişik malzemelerle oynuyorum. Mesela avokado, keçi peyniri ve turp. Veya tuna, rezene ve zeytin. Zencefil de salatanın sıkıcılığını gideren malzemelerden biri.

2 New Favorite Shows

Two of my new favorite TV Shows cannot be any more different from one and another. Yet funnily enough, they are both about moving into a new home, which happens to be my theme these days. Let's go from dark to light and start with American Horror Story.

From the creators of Glee and Nip/Tuck, it is about the Harmon family who moves from Boston to Los Angeles, in vain hopes of rebuilding their family after a past anguish. How could they have predicted that the house could be haunted with ghosts stuck in the house, piling up since 1920s?

This psycho-sexual thriller is so unabashedly gory (baby corpses in jars, women cut into pieces, you get the picture) dark, twisted and scary with all the cliches from screeching violins to creepy hands reaching out from underneath the bed. But despite the over the top gore and loopholes, you are drawn in the story by each ghost you are introduced to. But I must warn you, watching the episodes in a row, does give you nightmares. I suppose that's why the show is successful. For the trailer, click here.

Now on to the sweet dorky Jess, who is the main character of New Girl. She moves into a new apartment with 3 guy roommates, after walking in on her boyfriend cheating. The show is about these 4 roommates bonding a friendship.

It takes a lot to make me laugh uncontrollably loud and this show does it. What makes the show funny and what I love about it is not the supposed main character, but the roommates! I love these guys and their bantor, in jokes, perspective on friendship and women, trying so hard to protect their machoism and yet can't help but be sweet and there for Jess.

Although it touches upon such issues that we can all relate to such as awkwardness of dating, job search, friendship, image complexes, it is such a happy-making show. And I swear it has nothing to do with the fact that it reminds me of living in the States. For the trailer, just click here.

En yeni favorilerim olan bu iki TV Show bu kadar birbirlerinden farklı olabilirler. Ama komik bir şekilde, benim de şu sıralardaki temam gibi, ikisinin de konusu yeni bir eve taşınmak. Karanlıktan aydınlığa gidelim ve American Horror Story ile başlayalım.

Hadi şimdi tatlı dorky Jess'e gelelim, New Girl'ün ana karakteri. Jess, erkek arkadaşını kendisini aldatırken yakalayınca yeni bir eve taşınır. Tanımadığı 3 erkek oda arkadaşıyla beraber. Dizi bu dört oda arkadaşının birbirlerini tanıması ve yakın bir dostluk kurmasıyla ilgili.

Beni kontrol dışında kahkahalara boğmak oldukça zor ama bu show bunu başarıyor. Bu diziyi bu kadar komik yapan tahmin edilenin aksine ana karakter değil, oda arkadaşları! Bu çocukların didişmelerine, dostluk ve kadınlar konusundaki değişik perspektiflerine, kendi aralarındaki şakalaşmalara, maçoizmlerinden ödün vermek istemezken gene de Jess'i çok tatlı bir şekilde korumaya almalarına bayılıyorum.

Her ne kadar biriyle yeni çıkmanın rahatsızlığı, iş aramak, arkadaşlık, vücut kompleksleri gibi hepimizin empati kurabileceği konulara değinse de, insanı o kadar mutlu kılan bir show. Displaying Art

I am also busy looking for an apartment, as I am planning to move to my new place by my birthday, which is next month. One of the things that I look forward to is to display bits and pieces of art in my new home.

If you would like to have a wall filled with different mediums of art but you are on a budget, you can always rip a page from a photography or an art book and frame it. Or frame something that's special to you. For instance, I can't wait to frame the first painting my niece and I have done together.

In any case, here are some displays of art that I love. Painting a wall in a darker tone is also something to think about as it is a great way to bring the pieces forward.

Bugünlerde bir de ev aramakla meşgulum çünkü gelecek ayki doğumgünüme kadar yeni evime taşınmış olmak istiyorum. Sabırsızlıkla beklediğim şeylerden biri ordan burdan toparladığım resimleri yerleştirmek.

Not without Lipstick

I am still trying to detox from the Paris trip but it is hard to do with accumulating dinner parties, the Holiday Season, apartment search etc etc... But as Holly Golightly suggests, a girl can't rush around without her lipstick. No matter what, always do it in style. Other may not even notice, but you will feel good about yourself.

Paris seyahatinden sonra detoksa kendimi vermeye çalışıyorum ama üst üste gelen yemek partileri, Yılbaşı koşuşturmaları, ev aramalarla hiç de kolay olmuyor... Ama Holly Golightly'nin önerdiği gibi, bir bayan ruju olmadan koşuşturmamalı. Her ne yapıyorsanız yapın, hep bir tarzınız olsun. Başkaları farketmeye bilir, ama kendinizle ilgili siz çok daha iyi hissedersiniz.

I always get mixed feelings when I think of Paris. A bit of melancholy and femininity, a bit of joy for Noel, and of course completely giddiness when I think of my girlfriends. To fit my mood wings, I've got bringing along three playlists. Here they are:

 

The master Astor Piazzolla's album The Soul of Tango captures the urgency of passion, the lingering melancholy and the sweetness of love. My favorite song is called "Luna."

I can't wait to devour all the pretty Christmas decorations Paris has to offer.
