I woke up super early this morning in order to get to the office by 7 am for a meeting. After shaking off my morning grumbling, I was reminded of one of my favorite things to do when I was living in New York. I used to work from home so on some mornings, I would wake up at the crack of dawn, slip into a dress and go for a quick walk around the block. The streets under the morning sun would be so peaceful and quiet... until you reached a café, where people walking their dogs, taking their kids to school, on the way to go to work would be hustling and bustling to get coffee and a pastry to go. I would always get an almond croissant or a pain au chocolat and walk back home with a delicious anticipation.
I always complain about not being able to walk anywhere in Istanbul. But luckily I am only 5 minutes away from Komsu Firin. My favorite to get from there is either the Mastic Easter Bun or the Tahini Pastry. Other places where I wish I were walking distance to are Lucca (for their plain croisssant, who would have guessed?), Kantin (for their plum or cherry cookies) and Backyard for their carrot cake.
I love the above quote by Nabokov by the way. But evidently, one of the sweetest passions for me, is early morning yum yums.
Bu sabah acaip erken kalktım saat 7'de bir toplantı için ofisde olmam gerektiğinden. Sabah huysuzluğumu üstümden silkeledikten sonra New York'da yaşarken en çok yapmayı sevdiğim şeylerden biri aklıma geldi. O zamanlar evden çalışırdım. Bazı sabahlar sabahın köründe kalkar, üzerime bir elbise geçirir ve yürüyüşe çıkardım. Sokaklar sabah güneşinin altında çok huzurlu ve sessiz olurdu... ta ki bir caféye gelene kadar. Köpeklerini gezdirenler, çocuklarını okula götürenler, işe yetişenler, hepsi bir fincan kahve ve çörek için cumcuma yaratır olurdu. Ben de bademli kruvasan veya pain au chocolat alır evime geri yürürdüm, lezzetli bir heyecan içersinde.
Hep Istanbul'da oraya buraya yürüyemediğimden şikayet ederim. Ama ne mutlu ki en azından Komşu Fırın'a 5 dakikalık mesafedeyim. Buradaki favorilerim Sakızlı Paskalya Çöreği ve Tahinli Çörek. Diğer ''ah keşke hemen çıkıp oraya yürüyebilsem'' dediğim yerler Lucca (sade kruvasanları için, kimin aklına gelirdi?). Kantin (erikli veya kirazlı kurabiyeleri için) ve Backyard havuçlu kekleri için.
Nabokov'un yukarıdaki sözüne bayılıyorum, ''Edebiyat ve kelebekler, insanoğulunun en tatlı iki tutkusudur.'' Ama görüldüğü üzere, benim en tatlı tutkularımdan biri, sabah hapur hupurları.
