I love how June started so sunny and lively. This morning I was off to having brunch with Mr. M at the one and only Assk Café. I remember the first time my mother took me there for my 18th birthday. It was 1999 and I had just recovered from a life-threatning disease, so I wasn't yet back to my old tricks. As we slowly walked down those stairs, that are so perfectly hidden, leaving the traffic and all the noise of the city behind us, I never thought a healing wonderland was awaiting.
Well, 13 years later, Assk Cafe needs no promos. Tourists came and went, renovations came and went, bad service came and went. And it is still one of the great options in the city for brunch and afternoon cocktails. All thanks to the unbeatable location.
My foreign friends were always shocked by how close we were to the water, overseeing the endless Bosphorus. The director's chairs, the wooden tables, the potted colorful flowers all add to the inviting charm of the place. The escape that it provides from the city make up for all the well-intentioned but sometimes forgetful service or the overwhelming weekend crowds.
As for food, my favorites are the Messk Toast and Ask-i-Memnu (mille feuille with peaches) for dessert. Absolutely delish! It is also a great escape for wine and cheese, especially during the week-day afternoons.
Last time DJ G. had taken me there on his Vespa.... He is being missed so I will be meeting with Fuli for the Patrizio Buanne concert to listen to some appropriately cheesy, romantic Italian songs. For ticket information, click here.
Haziran ayının bu kadar güneşli ve canlı başlamasına bayılıyorum. Bu sabah Mr. M'le beraber bir tanecik Assk Kahve'deydik. Annemin ilk defa beni 18. doğumgünümde götürdüğünü hatırlıyorum. Yıl 1999'du ve ölümün eşiğinden döndüğüm hastalığımdan daha yeni ayaklanmıştım. Yavaşça o saklı merdivenlerden inmiştik, trafik ve şehrin gürültüsünü geride bırakarak. Hiç tahmin etmezdim böyle moral veren bir güzelliğe açılacağını o yolun.
13 yıl sonra Assk Kahve'nin reklamını yapmaya gerek yok. Turistler geldi gitti, renovasyonlar geldi gitti, kötü servis geldi gitti. Ve hala şehrin en keyifli brunch ve akşam keyfi için ideal mekanlarından biri. Hepsini de pahabiçilmez lokasyonuna borçlu.
Yurtdışından gelen arkadaşlarım hep şok olmuşlardır, ussuz bucaksız boğaz manzarasıyla denize bu kadar yakın olabildikleri için.Yönetmen sandalyeleri, tahta masalar, ekilmiş renkli çiçekler, hepsi mekanın davet-eden sevimliliğine ayrıca katkıda bulunuyor. Ve huzurla sunduğu şehirden kaçış sayesinde, iyi niyetli ama yavaş servis veya haftasonu kalabalığı çok da batmıyor.
Yemeğe gelince, iki vazgeçilmezim Meşk Tost ve tatlı olarak da Aşk-ı-Memnu (şeftalili milföy). Hhmm, leziz! Akşamüstü şarap ve peynir kaçamakları için de ideal bir yer, özellikle hafta-içi akşamüstleri.
En son buraya DJ G beni Vespa'sıyla götürmüştü. Kendisini özlüyoruz. O yüzden Fuli ile akşam Patrizio Buanne konserine gidip bu duruma uygun düşen saçma, romantik İtalyan şarkıları dinleyeceğiz. Bilet bilgileri için tıklayın.
