My uncle finally arrived from Munich and I am thrilled to be his host. We've spent a great day together, starting with a late breakfast, chatting on my couch, looking at photography books and listening to music. I've always heard stories about how families used to gather around the radio or their gramophones to listen to music in the old days. About how music, like a feast table, brought them together....My uncle always brings that old charm and closeness with him into our family, ever single time he visits.
This time around, he brought me a record that I had never heard of before. An album called Basra by the drummer Pete La Roca, with Joe Henderson at tenor sax, Steve Kuhn at the piano, and Steve Swallow at the bass. All these musicians play in such effortlessly tight harmony that it feels like home. This extraordinary album manages to be groovy and yet emotional at the same time.
Our favorite track is called "Lazy Afternoon." If you listen closely, you can hear just how immaculately he has captured that lazy mood, with a conflicting hint of emotional restlessness, as the end of the day slowly approaches. I wonder what other musical gems and life inspirations he will bring to us the next time he visits. I'll be waiting for his arrival like I used to wait by the window when I was a little girl.
Dayım en nihayet Münih'den geldi ve evimde misafir edebildiğim için çok mutluyum. Harika bir günü geçirdik beraber. Geç bir kahvaltı, ardından koltuğumda bol sohbetle fotoğraf kitaplarına dalıp müzik dinledik. Hep eskilerde ailelerin radyo veya gramafonlarının başında toplanıp müzik dinlediğini duymuşumdur. Nasıl müzik, bir ziyafet sofrası gibi, aile fertlerini bir araya getirirmiş... Dayım da her bizi ziyaret ettiğinde, o eski tarz, hoş yakınlığı ailemize getirir.
