The Book: The Last Sultan - Biography of Ahmet Ertegun

What a beautiful day! I am completely in the mood to grab an afternoon coffee and an almond croissant, stroll around the city and browse books for hours. One book in particular made the top of my Reading List. And that is the biography of Ahmet Ertegun by Robert Greenfield... The Last Sultan.

Known mainly for being the founder of Atlantic Records, he was the first man to ever ask for an autograph of Ella Fitzgerald, and the man who gave birth to the careers of Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, Norah Jones and many many many more.

What interests me about this book is not the business story behind running the legendary record label. What attracts me is how this unassumingly privileged man of elegance created his unique life with his loyal wife Mica, which resembled one hell of a wild party... By staying loyal to his vigorous character, musical instincts, innate cultural sensitivity and understanding, and also his extremely diverse taste that famously jumped from upper class sophistication to utter low brow.

Ne kadar güzel bir gün! Tam akşamüstü kahvesiyle bademli bir kruvasan kapıp, yürüye yürüye kendimi bir kitapçıda bulup saatlerce kitaplara bakınmalık. Özellikle bir kitap benim Okunacaklar Listesinde bir numaraya yükseldi. Robert Greenfield'in yazdığı Ahmet Ertegün'ün biyografisi...  The Last Sultan (Son Sultan).

Ama beni ilgilendiren bu efsanevi plak şirketinin yaratılışının arkasında yatan iş meseleleri değil. Beni asıl çeken, bu iddiasız seçkinlik ve zerafetinin ötesinde, sadık eşi Mica ile kendisine nasıl çılgın, deli dolu bir partiyi andıran benzersiz bir hayat yarattığı... Şiddetli, yaşam dolu karakterine, müzikal içgüdülerine, içine işlemiş kültürel duyarlılık ve anlayışına ve, bir anda sofistike elit sınıfından aşırı bir basitliğe atlayabilecek, meşhurca değişken zevkine sadık kalarak....
