The Best Burger in New York: Spotted Pig

 

 

 

 

Last Sunday I had a couple of friends over. With the intuition of a person who likes her drink, I foresaw my guests having major hang-overs from the night before and made a couple of pitchers of Bloody Mary's. Eye for an eye. While devouring the rightfully prepared pitchers, the topic of conversation inevitably turned into a heated discussion about the best hang-over food. And the winner is.... The Burger. 

Having lived in New York, people always ask me where they should go for the best burger in town. And after having delightfully and necessarily consumed countless of them over the years, I can state without a doubt that it resides at New York's first gastropub, The Spotted Pig.

When Cey was visiting, on a day when we both got exhausted from my insistance to rush around the city to see, eat, experience e-v-e-r-y-thing, we took refuge at The Spotted Pig for a long lunch. Because it was a mid-day on a mid-week, it was uncharacteristically empty as one is accustomed to long, agonizing hours of battle to get a table. We were seated upstairs at a corner table in the warm and cozy room packed with paraphernalia. 

Although tempted by the impressively extensive wine-list, we ordered a couple of glasses of bubbly instead and without a second thought added the burger to our order. Chargrilled on a brioche bun topped with crumbled Roquefort, served with a mountainous rosemary spiced paper thin fries, it is a giving, hearty burger. Who could ask for anything more of it? High quality ingredients. Patient and meticulous preparation. Juicy and flavorful results. Exciting presentation. 

When we were done, Cey approved that the burger was worth all the hustle and bustle I dragged her through her trip. And as my trip to New York approaches yet again, I simply cannot wait to have yet another bite. If only, there was an equivalent in Istanbul. Any suggestions? Geçtiğimiz pazar birkaç arkadaşım bendeydi. İçki içmekten zevk alan birinin ön sezisiyle, misafirlerimin önceki akşamdan kalma olabileceklerini tahmin ederek Bloody Mary hazırladım. Çivi çiviyi söker. Haklı olarak hazırladığım içkiyi sürahi üstüne sürahi tüketirken, sohbet konusu kaçınılmaz bir hızla en iyi hang-over yemeğiyle ilgili bir tartışmaya dönüştü. Kazanaaaan.... Burger. 

New York'da yaşadığımdan bir sürü insan gelip orayı ziyaret ettiklerinde en iyi nerede hamburger bulabileceklerini sorar. Keyifle ve bir yandan da mecburiyetten yıllar üzerinde değişik yerlerde tülkettiğimden, şimdi hiç bir şüphe duymadan söyleyebilirim ki, kendisi New York'un ilk gastropub'ı The Spotted Pig'dedir.

Cey ziyaret ettiği zaman, benim onu şehirde beğenip sevdiğim her yeri ve her şeyi görüp yiyip yaşaması için ordan oraya koşuşturmamdan artık ikimizin de tükendiği bir gün, uzun bir öğle yemeği için The Spotted Pig'e sığındık. Normalde bir masa bulabilmek için uzun ve acı bekleme savaşları verirken, hafta ortası bir günün akşamüstüsü olduğundan, karakterine aykırı bir şekilde boştu. Yukarıda sevimli ıvır zıvır eşyalarla donatılmış sıcak odadaki köşe masayı kaptık. 

Etkileyici bir genişliğe sahip şarap listesine rağmen, biz birer kadeh şampanya söylemeyi tercih ettik. Ve bir saniye bile düşünmeden burger'ı da siparişimize ekledik. Kömür ateşinde ızgara edilip brioche üzerine yerleştirilmiş, üzerine rokfor peyniri eklenmiş, yanında tepeleme biberiye ile tatlandırılıp kağıt kadar incecik doğranmış patates kızartması ile servis ediliyor. Verici, candan bir burger. İnsan daha ne isteyebilir? Yüksek kaliteli malzemeler. Sabırlı ve titiz bir hazırlanış. Tam kıvamında leziz bir tat. Heyecan verici sunum. 

Bitirdiğimizde Cey, bu burger'ın tüm koşuşturmalarımıza deydiğinin onayını verdi. New York seyahatim git gide yaklaşıyor bir ısırık alabilmek için sabırsızlanıyorum. Keşke İstanbul'da da böyle bir deneyim sunabilecek bir yer olsa. Tavsiyeleriniz var mı? Evet, size de tam kıvamında leziz bir hafta diliyorum! ;)
